A Guide to Nail City:
We sent our intern, Grace, out to investigate our city’s top attractions. Over the next week, a four-day article series titled “A Guide to Nail City” will explore the local sights, tastes, and sounds of Nail City.
Day Three: Sights & Sounds
Only a few parts of the world are able to experience the four seasons of the year – winter, spring, summer, and fall. Since Nail City is one of the rare parts of the world to experience this phenomenon, there must be additional activities to entertain our inhabitants and guests when the weather is less than satisfactory. So, what do you do on a rainy day? Do you just lay in bed and watch Netflix? Yet, all around us, there are appealing noises and picturesque images that permeate the streets and engulf our city. Many have been lured to Nail City for years as a result of our historic attractions. Naturally, the best option for an indoor activity is attending a Nailers game; however, when it is not hockey season, Nail City has several additional opportunities for entertainment.
Top Pick: Flashback Cinema at the Highlands, Marquee Cinemas
Imagine that you are sitting in the most comfortable chair, with the scent of butter on your fingertips. You shut your phone off, lean your back against the leather, and put your feet up on the seat in front of you. You are at the Highlands, Marquee Cinemas, waiting for the trailers to end, and the most epic blockbuster of the summer to begin. Yet, the movie is not new, but rather a film from years ago? Welcome to Flashback Cinema at the Highlands, Marquee Cinemas. Not only does the cinema offer showings of new, summer blockbuster films, but also the movie theater hosts their Flashback Cinema on Sundays and Wednesdays. This experience gives everyone an opportunity to enjoy their favorite films in a movie theater setting once again. The movie theater features an arcade and concessions. So, when the Flashback Cinema is showing Jaws, you can duck out during spine chilling scenes. Marquee Cinemas also offers event hosting opportunities that are perfect for large groups such as, auditorium rentals, birthday parties, church services, private showings, and school field trips.
Second Pick: Capitol Music Hall
If you are not an avid movie goer, I suggest looking into the other options for entertainment available in Nail City. For example, Nail City is home of the largest theatre in West Virginia, the Capitol Music Hall. A landmark building in the national historic district of downtown Wheeling, the Capitol Music Hall is a charming venue with a beautiful riverfront location on Main Street. For years, the site served as the home of Jamboree U.S.A. and the Wheeling Symphony. This historic piece of Nail City was restored with general improvements to the venue in 2009. Originally, the Capitol showed movies, music shows, Broadway shows, church services, and other live music events. While the music hall no longer features movies, it continues to host extraordinary musical events. On non-show days, the Hall provides those interested with the opportunity to tour the historic facility. These tours primarily occur on Monday mornings and are available to book online. If you are interested in experiencing a charming piece of history, I recommend booking your tour of the Capitol Music Hall now or getting tickets for an upcoming show. The sights and sounds from the Capitol Music Hall are truly unforgettable.
Third Pick: The Penitentiary
Last but certainly not least, Nail City is home to the Penitentiary in Moundsville. The Penitentiary was home to some of the cruelest criminals of all time. In 1866, the Penitentiary was commissioned to be built with a striking gothic-style design. Multiple prison escapes led to the retirement of the facility in 1995. However, the facility has been maintained as a tourist attraction, as well as a training facility for law enforcement officials. The prison now attracts thousands for its tours of the grounds. Individuals can explore the historic facility and learn more about the prison’s dark secrets. Annually, the prison hosts Halloween attractions such as the, “Dungeon of Horrors” that allows those who dare to wander through life behind bars. This historic monument is an eerie, historic piece of Nail City.
Honorable Mention: Nail City Record
Nail City Record is bringing arts and music back into our area on 12th Street in downtown Wheeling. Music lovers will surely adore the record and music store that features a collection of vinyl records, CD’s, and cassette tapes. The store’s mission is to stimulate the local economy, by riding the coattails of the three-day art and music festival in downtown Wheeling. The eclectic shop combines new music with collectible vinyl. Nail City Record also provides vinyl care and cleaning services for all of your memorabilia. Monthly subscription boxes, record players, t-shirts, and books round out the list of products that the shop offers. Not only does Nail City Record feature a variety of merchandise, but also the store provides a number of intangible experiences. Nail City Record hosts several events throughout the year such as album release parties, artist signing events, and artist spotlight sessions. Appropriately named after our city’s rich history, Nail City Record aims to foster a new, fresh atmosphere in Nail City while still cherishing our city’s rich history. This sound of Nail City is more than a store; it is a place where people of all ages can unite and listen to some good music.
From the movie theater to the Penitentiary, Nail City is infused with entertainment opportunities, historic tours, appealing noises, and impressive architectural designs. Nail City offers so much more than just Nailer games. There is so much to explore, and we would like to encourage you to discover more sights and sounds in #NailCity.
