Carr Drives Nailers Past Royals, 2-1

READING, PA- The Wheeling Nailers have played three games in seven days away from WesBanco Arena, and their time on the road has been rather fun. Cody Wydo and Doug Carr shined the brightest on Saturday night, as Wydo lit the lamp twice, while Carr made 34 saves, as the Nailers edged the Reading Royals, 2-1 at Santander Arena for their third road victory in a row.

The two teams played to a scoreless draw in the first period, with the Nailers coming the closest to scoring, as Gage Quinney rang a shot off of the right post. Reading had a tremendous opportunity to go ahead in the second period, but a splendid save by Doug Carr denied Chris McCarthy on the doorstep. Wheeling ultimately pulled in front with a late surge in the middle frame. The first goal was scored with 3:12 left in the stanza. Nick Sorkin and Jarrett Burton worked the puck into the low slot for a scoring opportunity. Cody Wydo took a smack at a bouncing puck on the left side of the crease, directing it into the cage. Wydo struck again in the final ten seconds of the frame, as he waltzed into the slot, and slid a shot in along the ice.

Reading tried to make things interesting in the third period, pulling within one at the 16:01 mark. Matt Willows rushed ahead on a 2-on-1 break down the left side of the ice. He kept the puck to himself, and swept a shot in along the ice. The Nailers stood tall to make sure the game didn't get an closer, and they finished off their third straight road win, 2-1.

Doug Carr was magnificent in goal for Wheeling, earning the win with 34 saves on 35 shots. Martin Ouellette was saddled with the loss for Reading, despite turning away 32 of the 34 shots he faced.

The Nailers will return home for three games next week. The homestand will begin with a WesBanco Winning Wednesday on January 25th against Toledo at 7:05. The middle contest is a Flat Screen Friday and Frosty Friday against Quad City on January 27th. Finally, the highlight promotion of the week takes place on January 28th, when fans will get to meet two-time Stanley Cup Champion Pascal Dupuis on Pittsburgh Penguins Night, which features a 7:05 face-off against Brampton.
