Nailers Re-Sign Nick Sorkin

WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, are excited to announce their 14th player signing of the 2017 offseason. Wheeling has signed forward Nick Sorkin to an ECHL contract.

Sorkin, 26, has played two full seasons of professional hockey in North America, in addition to one season in Sweden, and will be entering his second campaign as a member of the Nailers. In 2016-17, Nick was one of Wheeling's top offensive performers, as he finished third on the club with 57 points. His 43 assists were second on the team. January was Sorkin's best month of the year, as he racked up 17 points in 11 games, including six contests with multiple points. Nick also earned the opportunity to play in eight AHL games with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and San Diego Gulls. The forward has appeared in 142 professional games in North America, totaling 26 goals, 57 assists, and 83 points.

"Nick Sorkin is both a goal scorer and a playmaker, and we see him as one of the top ten forwards in the league, if not the top five," said Nailers Head Coach Jeff Christian. "He's a great team guy, who leads both on and off of the ice, and the players all love him. Nick plays center a lot, and is good at distributing the puck, but I think he has 20-25 goals in him, too."

Prior to turning pro, the Rockville, Maryland native attended the University of New Hampshire, where he majored in Finance, while playing four years of college hockey for the Wildcats. Over the course of his time in Durham, Sorkin amassed 34 goals, 64 assists, and 98 points in 142 games, which included a standout senior season, as he led UNH with 20 goals, while finishing second on the squad with 41 points. Nick also played one season of junior hockey in the USHL, suiting up with the Waterloo Black Hawks and Sioux City Musketeers.

"Wheeling is the best place to prepare you to move up to the next level," Sorkin said. "The fans are great, and on the ice, we have a good balance with the guys coming back. It's more of my game to possess the puck and make plays happen, but this summer I've worked more on my shot."

Nick Sorkin and the Wheeling Nailers will begin the 2017-18 season with two road games against the Greenville Swamp Rabbits on October 13th and 14th. The home opener at WesBanco Arena takes place on October 21st at 7:05, when the Nailers do battle with the Cincinnati Cyclones.
