WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, are excited to announce their 13th player signing of the 2017 offseason. Wheeling has signed forward Cam Brown to an ECHL contract.
Brown, 24, got his first taste of professional hockey at the end of the 2016-17 season, when he joined the Adirondack Thunder for their run to the North Division Championship, as well as the first round of the Kelly Cup Playoffs. Cam made his debut with the Thunder on March 21st against Orlando, then recorded his first goal and assist in his fourth game on March 28th, also at home against the Solar Bears. In nine regular season games, the forwarded tallied two goals, five assists, and seven points, highlighted by a three-point night on April 7th in Elmira. He went on to see action in four playoff games during the first round against Manchester, chalking up three assists.
"Cam Brown came out of college, and played well in Adirondack, making an immediate impact on their team as they went to the playoffs," said Nailers Head Coach Jeff Christian. "Cam is a gritty playmaking forward with lots of speed, who can grind, and will work hard down low. He served as team captain at Maine, he's really sharp, and mature as well."
Prior to turning pro, the Natick, Massachusetts native attended the University of Maine, where he majored in Business Management, while playing four years of college hockey for the Black Bears. During his career in Orono, Brown appeared in 146 games, amassing 23 goals, 83 assists, and 106 points. His most productive season was his senior campaign, when he finished third in Hockey East with 35 assists. Cam also played two seasons of junior hockey in the USHL with the Sioux City Musketeers and Youngstown Phantoms, as well as two seasons of junior hockey in the EJHL with the New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs.
"I am ecstatic to be part of the organization and get the year rolling," Brown said. "I am dependable in the defensive zone, I create opportunities in the offensive zone, and my quickness is one of my best attributes. It was a really cool experience getting to play with Adirondack at the end of the year and in the playoffs - I got my first taste of the league and the level, and it taught me the importance of preparing."
Cam Brown and the Wheeling Nailers will begin the 2017-18 season with two road games against the Greenville Swamp Rabbits on October 13th and 14th. The home opener at WesBanco Arena takes place on October 21st at 7:05, when the Nailers do battle with the Cincinnati Cyclones.
