Giddy Up! Nailers Gallop Past Royals, 6-3

WHEELING, WV- After getting shutout 24 hours earlier, the Wheeling Nailers looked like a completely different team, as they evened their weekend series with the Reading Royals at WesBanco Arena on Saturday night. Zach Urdahl's two goals led the way in a six-goal attack by the Nailers, who scored the final four of the night to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 6-3 triumph. David Breazeale's goal in the second period gave Wheeling the lead for good in the team's 30th win of the season.

Wheeling and Reading have played a lot of low scoring games this season, but the first period was a completely different story, as both teams turned on the red light twice. The Nailers got on the board first at the 11:20 mark with a successful power play. Matty De St. Phalle directed a pass through the slot to Brayden Edwards in the left circle. Edwards took his time in settling the puck down, before rifling a shot off of the back bar for a 1-0 lead. Wheeling temporarily upped its lead to two less than five minutes later. Connor Lockhart curled out of the left corner and swept a shot just inside of the right post. Reading responded on the very next shift, needing just 14 seconds to pull back within one. Cam Cook's shot from the right circle got padded away, but the rebound was slammed back in by Andrew Kurapov. The Royals then netted the equalizer with 8.9 seconds left in the stanza on the power play. Austin Saint looked off a pass and squeaked a shot between Maxim Pavlenko's legs from the bottom of the left circle.

The goals continued to pour in during the middle frame. Reading took its first lead of the night at the 4:29 mark during 4-on-4 play. The Nailers coughed up the puck in their defensive zone, which led to a Kyle Haskins steal. Haskins skated in alone, and roofed a quick backhander up and under the crossbar. Wheeling had a strong push back, which resulted in both a tying and a go-ahead marker. The tying tally came at the 9:03 mark, when Logan Pietila slipped a pass to his right for Zach Urdahl, who whipped a wrist shot through Yaniv Perets' legs. David Breazeale put the Nailers on top 4-3 with 4:13 remaining, as he sailed a wrist shot through traffic and in from the left point.

Wheeling battled through some adversity in the third period, but took care of business and shut the door on the Royals. Urdahl gave the home team some insurance with his second of the night, as he flew past the defense for a breakaway, which he converted with a low shot. The Nailers successfully killed off four penalties in the final period, and the last kill was punctuated by Daniel Laatsch's shorthanded empty net goal. That was the first shorthanded tally surrendered by Reading this season, and it put the finishing touches on the 6-3 Wheeling victory.

Maxim Pavlenko picked up the win for the Nailers, as he made 20 saves on 23 shots. Yaniv Perets gave up five goals on 38 shots in the loss for the Royals.

The Nailers and Royals will close out their weekend series in Wheeling on Sunday at 4:10. Following the game, fans will be able to skate with the odd-numbered players. The next Big-6 Promotional Game is Margaritaville Night on Saturday, March 14th. Individual tickets, group tickets, and more are available now by calling (304) 234-GOAL.
