WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers battled back from two separate deficits to pick up one point on Saturday night, as they faced the Cincinnati Cyclones at WesBanco Arena. Zach Krajnik tallied one goal and one assist, while Ryan Pitoscia posted his second straight two-point performance to help Wheeling force overtime. Cincinnati's Sahil Panwar followed up his two-assist effort during the game by scoring the lone goal in the third round of the shootout, giving the Cyclones the 4-3 decision.
Cincinnati controlled the majority of the play in the first period with a 14-4 shots advantage. The Nailers kept the visitors at bay for the most part, but the Cyclones cashed in on their lone power play to take a 1-0 lead into the dressing room. Frank Djurasevic let a wrist shot go from the top of the left circle. The shot flew toward the goal at waist height, which was the perfect level for Jackson Kunz to redirect the puck down and in for the tally.
The middle frame saw a pair of goals, which were scored 15 seconds apart from each other. Cincinnati temporarily extended its lead with a four-on-four goal at the 6:44 mark. Matt Hellickson grabbed the puck out from the right corner boards and spotted fellow defenseman John Spetz wide open on the left side of the slot. Spetz proceeded to roof a wrist shot up and under the left side of the crossbar. Wheeling responded immediately. Ryan Pitoscia pounded a low shot on goal from the left side, which produced a rebound for Zach Krajnik to hammer home.
The Nailers came back twice during the third period to force overtime. The first equalizer came on the power play at the 3:16 mark. Kevin Gursoy kept the play alive at the offensive blueline, which led to Denis Smirnov setting up Dante Sheriff for a one-timer, which he buried from the bottom of the left circle. The Cyclones regained the lead less than three minutes later. Ryan Kirwan found his way behind the defense, where he received a pass from Simon Labelle, then proceeded to slip a backhander underneath Wheeling netminder Kasimir Kaskisuo. With 8:44 to go, the Nailers drew even. Krajnik helped Ryan Pitoscia win a face-off back to Robby Drazner, who wired a wrist shot into the right side of the twine.
Cincinnati outshot the Nailers, 5-1 in overtime, but the seven-minute session didn't decide the contest, which progressed to a shootout. The lone goal of the shootout came on the third attempt by the Cyclones, as Sahil Panwar buried his shot into the left side of the net.
Timofei Obvintsev picked up the win for Cincinnati, as he made 13 saves on 16 shots during regulation and overtime, before going 3-for-3 in the shootout. Kasimir Kaskisuo thwarted 33 of the 36 shots he faced for Wheeling during regulation and overtime, then made two saves on three shots in the shootout.
