WORCESTER, MA- It took 41 minutes and 16 seconds for a goal to be scored on Saturday night, as the Wheeling Nailers and Worcester Railers traded blows at DCU Center. Wheeling finally broke the deadlock, and ended up turning on the red light three times in a 3-1 road triumph. Dustin Geregach snapped a 1-1 tie with 9:33 left and added an assist on the insurance goal, while Kasimir Kaskisuo secured the victory with 27 saves.
A couple of successful penalty kills by Wheeling highlighted a scoreless first period, which saw the shots on goal go in favor of the Railers, 11-4.
The scoreboard continued to stay blank in the middle frame, which was a better period for the Nailers. Wheeling held a 7-5 shots advantage and received three power plays to Worcester's one.
After two scoreless stanzas, the third period was a completely different story, as four pucks found the back of the net. The first one went to the Nailers at the 1:11 mark. Denis Smirnov started the play by winning a puck battle behind the offensive goal. Smirnov also ended up finishing the play, as he deposited the rebound of Tristan Thompson's left point shot from just outside of the right side of the crease. Worcester tied the score 1:06 later during a five-minute power play. Ryan Wheeler's center point wrist shot got booted out by Kasimir Kaskisuo's right leg, but the rebound was put back in by Caige Sterzer. Wheeling regained the lead with 9:33 remaining with a man advantage of its own. Dustin Geregach took a wrist shot from the middle of the blueline, which flew into the top-left corner of the twine. 2:36 later, the Nailers got a huge insurance goal. Justin Taylor blew past his defender on the left side of the ice, then shifted from forehand to backhand to flip in his team's third marker of the period and the final goal in the 3-1 win.
Kasimir Kaskisuo was excellent in goal for Wheeling, as he earned first star honors by denying 27 of the 28 shots he faced. Parker Gahagen made 17 saves on 20 shots in the loss for the Railers.
