WORCESTER, MA- The Wheeling Nailers were playing their third game in three days on Sunday afternoon, as they faced the Worcester Railers at DCU Center. The Nailers couldn't have played a better game, as they scored a season-high five goals and allowed a season-low 17 shots in a 5-3 triumph. Matt Crasa scored two goals, Dante Sheriff notched one goal and two assists, and Philip Svedebäck earned his first professional goaltending victory.
Both teams got on the scoreboard during the first period, courtesy of a goal from a defenseman. Worcester struck first at the 9:29 mark. Sam Stange wound the puck around the boards to Adam Samuelsson along the left wing wall. Samuelsson stepped into a slap shot, which he clobbered into the top-right corner of the cage. The Nailers answered that marker with 2:39 remaining, while the teams were playing 4-on-4. Hunter Sansbury sent the puck to the top of the crease, where it was tipped home by his partner on the blueline, Dustin Geregach.
Wheeling carried its momentum into the middle frame by taking its first lead of the afternoon. Remy Parker netted the go-ahead goal at the 8:40 mark, when he wired a wrist shot just inside of the right post from the left circle. 2:39 later, the Nailers went ahead by two. Tristan Thompson's wrist shot from the right point got kicked out by Gabriel Carriere, but the rebound went directly to Matt Crasa, who smashed it in from the left side of the crease. The Railers got one goal back on the power play with 1:14 remaining, when former Nailer Jordan Kaplan banged in a one-time feed from Caige Sterzer.
Wheeling kept its foot on the gas pedal in the third period, as it outshot the Railers, 12-4, while putting two more pucks in the net. Crasa collected his second rebound marker of the afternoon on a power play at the 10:11 mark, when he stashed in the leftovers from Robby Drazner's initial attempt. The assist gave Drazner a six-game point streak. Vinny Corcoran briefly brought Worcester within one, when he touched in an Anthony Repaci pass on the right side of the crease. However, the Nailers needed just 3:13 to get that goal back, when Dante Sheriff whizzed in a shot from a tight angle just above the goal line along the right wing wall. That made the score 5-3 for Wheeling, which was the final.
Philip Svedebäck earned his first professional win for the Nailers, as he made 14 saves on 17 shots. Gabriel Carriere took the loss for the Railers, as he allowed five goals on 31 shots.
